Lower Primary (5 – 8 years)
Lower Primary at Camilla Brook Place includes Years 1, 2 (Key Stage 1), and 3 (the start of Key Stage 2). We use both the National British Curriculum and the Nigerian Curriculum. Here, we focus on developing children’s learning and interpersonal skills. We believe that children learn best through project based activities, which are incorporated into all subjects. Alongside practical skills, we encourage children to think independently, solve problems through discussion, and explain their reasoning, whether in numeracy, history, or science.
In Year 1, we are dedicated to providing a high-quality learning environment that builds on the experiences from Reception while introducing new challenges in line with the KS1 curriculum. This transition from the EYFS curriculum ensures that children stay engaged and excited about learning, resulting in excellent outcomes. Our approach combines independent learning with focused group tasks led by teachers. Throughout the week, children explore a variety of subjects including Guided Reading, SPAG (Spelling and Grammar), Comprehension, History, Maths, Science, PSHE, Religious Education, and Humanities (Geography and History).Additionally, students enjoy specialist subjects such as Art, P.E., Music, French, Yoruba, Etiquette, ICT, Coding, Robotics, and Library time, enriching their educational experience and fostering a love for learning.
In Year 2, we carefully guide children towards a more formal and structured learning style. However, we still use an integrated approach to teaching knowledge and skills. At this stage, children are ready to focus for longer periods of quiet or silent work, which we balance with active and social learning activities. This mix helps ensure that our students stay motivated and enthusiastic, leading to high academic achievements.
Year 3 marks the beginning of Key Stage Two and is a transitional stage for children at Camilla Brook Place. Our goal is to build on the skills they developed in Key Stage One, fostering initiative, creativity, and independence. By the time they leave Lower Primary, they’ll be well-prepared for the challenges of Upper Primary. In Year 3, we emphasize developing key skills in numeracy and literacy. This includes mastering joined handwriting, having a secure knowledge of phonics and spelling patterns, instantly recalling multiplication facts, and fully understanding place value in large numbers. With these foundational skills, children are ready to tackle more challenging learning situations. Our Lower Primary department provides a happy, friendly, and safe environment where children feel confident and enjoy learning.
